Move supports strategy to expand firm’s expertise, reach in California’s healthcare market
SmithGroup has hired medical planner Chai Jayachandran, AIA, ACHA, ACHE, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C, as a leader of its growing Health Studio at its Los Angeles office. She will be responsible for expanding the office’s project portfolio and strengthening the company’s position as a leading healthcare design firm in California.
Jayachandran possesses more than 15 years of experience in the planning, design and construction of large, complex projects and was previously employed by Perkins+Will, Los Angeles, as a senior healthcare planner. Her career includes work for many notable health systems, including Providence Tarzana Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, and Maui Memorial Medical Center, among others.
“Chai understands the drivers impacting California’s healthcare market and has a clear grasp of the challenges that our clients face on a daily basis,” said Bonnie Khang-Keating, director of SmithGroup’s Los Angeles office. “She knows what it takes to develop solutions that are patient-centered, yet also support an owner’s business objectives.”
Adding Jayachandran to SmithGroup’s healthcare leadership team supports the firm’s strategic plan to expand its presence in central and southern California. Its Los Angeles office has more than tripled its size, growing to a staff of over 70 employees, in the last five years following the award of several notable projects. These include the 197,000-square-foot Sharp Healthcare, Ocean View Tower in Chula Vista, California; the $418 million renovation and expansion of Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center’s Downey, California campus; and a comprehensive, multi-campus facilities master planning and programming effort for Scripps Health.
Jayachandran earned a Master of Architecture with a certificate in Health Systems and Design from Texas A&M University, and received a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Madras, India. A registered architect in California, she is a member of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), where she presently serves on the group’s Healthcare Steering Committee. In addition, she is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and is an Evidence-Based Design Accredited and Certified (EDAC) professional.
Jayachandran is a resident of West Los Angeles.
