Bethany’s grandfather, a county assessor, first introduced her to the value of the built environment. “I found myself exploring construction sites, marveling at the infrastructure of buildings,” she explains. “As soon as I learned that architects used both the artistic and analytical sides of the brain, I knew it was what I wanted to be when I grew up.” Later, traveling as a student ambassador to post-apartheid South Africa, Bethany would find another role model in none other than Nelson Mandela. “I learned to respect his perseverance and his belief in the goodness of mankind, no matter what situation he was personally enduring,” she says. Her travels and life experiences have taught her the intrinsic value of adaptability. “Rather than planning every step of the future, take time to learn from each and every opportunity of present life,” she suggests.
