Short-sighted infrastructure and planning is one of the most common themes in the revitalization of major cities, as congestion and aging roads inflict real disruption to residents and workers. Located in car-centric Los Angeles, at the edge of the San Gabriel foothills, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center had become burdened by too many parking lots and poor planning, affecting the campus’ functionality, but also eroding its aesthetic appeal and patient perceptions.

Seeking to completely transform the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center campus, the County of Los Angeles partnered with SmithGroup to develop a new multifaceted master plan that consolidates and segregates inpatient and outpatient services into dedicated buildings to optimize the quality of care. The fundamental reorganization, expansion and integration of new outpatient services, including a new medical office building and assisted living center, achieves the specific goals of being more community-based and patient-centered.

Following a vision aptly dubbed “Nature’s Edge,” the new Olive View-UCLA Medical Center campus provides for today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s demands, in a setting that integrates the spirit of the site’s natural beauty.
