Through the generous support and collaboration of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, SmithGroup was retained to study and reconfigure the iconic 1920s Flint Journal building to house the College of Human Medicine’s Flint campus, the Master of Public Health program and the college’s newly recruited public health researchers.

The integration of the program into the 101,000 square-foot historic Flint Journal building required creativity and a clear understanding of the existing building. The completed design respects the building’s original character, while creating a contemporary facility that houses public health research, clinical skills labs, classrooms, and community outreach and event space. The original high-bay printing area now serves as new collaborative learning areas for students and researchers. Sixteen loft apartments occupy the oldest portion of the building. A strong street presence furthers MSU’s goal of increased community engagement.
