Tom always wanted to be an engineer. "I've always been intrigued with how stuff was designed and went together," he says. "When I was young, engineering seemed like a good way to become an astronaut." Except for that last part, Tom's career has worked out quite nicely. As Director of Electrical Engineering for the Washington, DC office, he brings a wealth of electrical and computer engineering experience to SmithGroup projects, with an emphasis on electrical distribution design, mission critical systems, technology integration and sustainability. A self-described "techno-geek," he admires the late Steve Jobs. "His understanding of ‘controlling’ the hardware and software adapt very well with my thoughts on how integrated design is supposed to work," he notes. Tom defies the techno-geek stereotype with a strong connection to the environment. An avid wilderness adventurer, Tom says, "If I wasn't an engineer, I'd want to combine my love of the great outdoors with my passion to help at risk youth."
