Carl is the past President and Chief Executive Officer of SmithGroup, and was responsible for leading the strategic and marketing direction for the firm for 14 years. During his 32 years with SmithGroup, Carl has also served as principal-in-charge for many of the firm’s most notable projects. Among them are Visteon Corporate headquarters in suburban Detroit and Chrysler’s Headquarters. He has guided a number of other key projects, including the Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the GSA’s San Francisco Federal Office Building, and the renovation and expansion of the Detroit Institute of Arts. He has practiced overseas and locally. He led the master planning for the Makronisos mixed-used development in Cyprus, the Ford Dearborn Campus Master Plan and the Detroit Athletic Club’s recent renovations and additions. Carl continues to practice and teach for the firm from the Detroit office. He enjoys being active within the community, dedicating his time to non-profit work as the Treasurer for the Michigan Architectural Foundation, RacquetUp Detroit, and the Detroit Athletic Club.
