Gansu Provincial is not a typical hospital. In its existing hospital, local art adorns the walls. Carefully selected music plays over the speakers. To be treated for illness, to the Chinese, is a journey of healing, and the client took this to heart in its desire to create a variety of healing experiences.
Our team was chosen for its experience in creating medical spaces that speak as much to the patients’ mind as they do to their bodies. Through our design work we created a space where healing can be achieved in several ways. Our design brought three hospitals onto one campus — a women and children’s hospital, a pediatrics hospital, and a general acute care hospital — under a unifying concept that integrates elements of nature and Feng Shui. The three disparate hospitals are linked through a river gallery that is the vessel where art and the connection to daylight and nature are intertwined to enrich the patient experience and accelerate patient recovery.
Through a collaborative and research-driven process, our team ensures that the journey of healing will begin at Gansu’s new Women and Children’s International Hospital, perched just beside one of China’s greatest rivers.
