Troy Thompson is one of three managing partners leading SmithGroup. He is responsible for innovation and positioning the firm for the future through his focus on design and delivery processes and tools, research, technology and talent development. Troy has been leading many of the firm’s efforts on making Equity, Diversity and Inclusion more integral to the firm culture. Troy is an appointed member of the AIA-AGC Joint Committee, the Executive Advisory Board for the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University and the board of directors of The Center for Innovation and Design in the Construction Industry (CIDCI). Troy and SmithGroup are the Emens Visiting Professor/Firm in Residence at Ball State. A preservation architect, Troy’s projects include the new White House Visitor Center, renovation of the brutalist, mid-century US Embassy in Uruguay and work at the Smithsonian Castle. He has participated in Harvard University’s Archaeological Exploration of Sardis, Turkey since 1988. Troy believes that travel, understanding history and respecting culture are essential for impactful designers and preservation professionals.
