University of Houston Breaks Ground on Medical Research Building
The University of Houston has broken ground on the new Medical Research Building, a $77.5 million facility that will expand the university's research enterprise and support the growth of its health sciences programs.
Designed by SmithGroup, the 57,000-square-foot building will bring biomedical researchers, engineers and computer scientists together in one environment to advance discovery across disciplines. Located adjacent to the Fertitta College of Medicine, the facility will include wet laboratories, computational research spaces, a clinical trials unit, a virtual reality behavioral health suite and flexible collaboration areas.
“The Medical Research Building was designed to foster collaboration and discovery while creating a welcoming environment for students, researchers and the community,” said Kalman Nagy, design leader for SmithGroup. “As the second building on the University of Houston’s medical campus, we wanted to create a strong connection to the College of Medicine and the surrounding woodlands, with outdoor terraces, shared learning spaces and natural views that inspire interaction and innovation.”
Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
