Two Pioneering Projects from the Early Days of LEED

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Philip Merrill Environmental Center

 

Two decades ago, the LEED certification program was still in its infancy when two projects achieved "firsts" on the same day. Our Philip Merrill Environmental Center for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation received the first LEED Platinum certification in the world on March 30, 2000. 

Heather Benjamin reports a retrospective of these two pioneering projects in the Summer 2021 issue of USGBC+ magazine. Our Director of Sustainability Greg Mella shares what it was like designing such a groundbreaking facility and how CBF continues to advance sustainability at the Merrill Center even today.
