Sustainable Design

SmithGroup has been a leader in sustainable design since the term was first coined, and we continue to refine and advance our capabilities as an essential part of our mission to design a better future. In fact, we view sustainability as more than a mission. Designing for the overall health of people and planet are fundamental responsibilities of our profession.

We are noted for our many award-winning green designs that showcase integrated, cutting-edge systems unique to each location and client. Numerous projects have achieved the highest levels of sustainable design, including LEED Platinum, Living Building, net-zero and regenerative design. At the same time, we engage our clients and communities as co-creators in our process, centering design decisions around their needs and priorities.

SmithGroup is a proud signatory of multiple climate commitments—including AIA 2030 Commitment, MEP 2040 Challenge, SE 2050 Challenge, the ASLA Climate Commitment and the LAF New Landscape Declaration. These commitments shape our ambition to move towards a decarbonized future, and to shift our built systems towards methods of circularity. We believe in designing for the next 100 years, recognizing that our future will be much different than our past.

We also practice what we preach, achieving carbon neutrality within our own organization and continually improving our internal operations, education and processes through our Climate IMPACT team. These multidisciplinary experts are dedicated full-time to high-performance building and next generation-infrastructure design, climate adaptation planning and keeping SmithGroup at the leading edge of climate innovation.
