Darin is a Michigan native born and raised.  That said, he believes real architecture evolves from the balanced interaction of a heterogeneity of inputs, such as a diverse project team, the economy, the environment, users, technology, history and many other influences that only come from experience.  Influences on Darin’s career include studies in Florence, Italy and extensive travel.  In addition, his hearing impairment has helped him appreciate architecture through all the senses and has strongly impacted his work as SmithGroup Detroit’s senior designer for Health Professions.  Darin earned BS Architecture, Master or Architecture and Master of Engineering (Structural) degrees from the University of Michigan.  He is a former AIA Michigan Young Architect of the Year Award recipient and has served as an adjunct professor at both the University of Detroit Mercy and Lawrence Technological University. “My first and strongest recommendation to my students is that they experience as many things and places as possible,” says Darin. “Experience is the architect’s greatest instructor.”
