MISSION CRITICAL

The fusion of artifical intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) is unlocking new avenues for innovation and industry. The growing demand for higher rack densities and efficient water-based cooling solutions pose design challenges and opportunities. Artificial intelligence will have significant impacts on the power grid, as large-scale data centers can each consume more than 100 megawatts of power. SmithGroup continually pushes the envelope to meet the energy demands of AI and HPC facilities. We lead the charge with high density rack designs and our work with the U.S. Department of Energy Cooler Chips Initiative to reduce energy demand impacts.

We have a significant background in pioneering air and liquid-cooled solutions for data centers. The waste heat resulting from computational power use in data centers is enormous, and if captured, data centers can be the new clean heating plants. Although the push for renewable energy is impacting a grid-wide shift, there’s a lack of attention to sustainable end-use consumption. This can be addressed with a more value-based system that incentivizes responsible energy use and innovation.
